Mar da Luz is situated between the resort of Luz and Burgau within the resort of Porto Dona Maria, 6 kilometres away is the main town of Lagos with one of the largest bays on the Algarve. An attractive, bustling town it was conquered in the 8th century by the Moors who left behind fortifications, some of which can still be seen today. During the 15th century the pioneer Henry the Navigator turned Lagos into an important naval centre and in fact the city was the capital of the Algarve from 1576 – 1756.

The centre of the town consists of pretty 18th and 19th century buildings. Cobbled streets and enchanting squares link the maize of thoroughfares creating an ambience of charm, culture and history in this captivating town.

The citizens of Lagos continue to make their living from fishing giving the town a character and independence all of its own. The smart new marina to the east side of the town continues its naval heritage and provides the first safe anchorage point on the south coast for boats coming in from the Atlantic.
